Zimbabwe, a landlocked country in Southern Africa, is bordered by Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa, and Botswana. Renowned for its vibrant cultures and breathtaking landscapes, Zimbabwe is a key destination in the safari tourism industry. The country features diverse terrain, including flat plains, rolling hills, mountainous regions, and striking granite outcrops. Notable geographical landmarks include the Victoria Falls—one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World—and Lake Kariba, one of the world’s largest manmade lakes. The Eastern Highlands offer lush mountain scenery, while national parks such as Hwange and Mana Pools provide rich opportunities for wildlife viewing.
The capital of Zimbabwe is Harare, and the country has a population of approximately 14.6 million people. It recognizes 16 official languages, with Shona and Ndebele being the most widely spoken. English serves as the primary language for government, education, and business. Christianity is the predominant religion, practiced by nearly 87% of the population, though traditional beliefs in ancestral spirits remain significant in Shona and Ndebele culture.
Zimbabwe’s climate is generally temperate, with warm sunny days and cooler nights from May to August. The rainy season lasts from December to April, with the Eastern Highlands receiving the most precipitation. Cities like Harare, Bulawayo, and Victoria Falls experience varying temperature ranges, with Victoria Falls being the hottest and most humid, especially from September to October.
Traditional Zimbabwean cuisine is centered around sadza (or isitshwala), a thick maize porridge eaten with meat and vegetables. Other notable dishes include nhedzi (wild mushroom soup), dovi (peanut butter stew), and mopane worms (madora/macimbi), which are enjoyed as protein-rich snacks. Beverages like traditional sorghum beer (chibuku) and porridge drinks such as bota are also widely consumed.
Travelers to Zimbabwe require a valid passport with at least six months of validity and three blank pages. Visas are typically required and may be obtained on arrival or in advance. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is necessary if coming from or transiting through an affected area. The local currency is the Zimbabwe Dollar (ZWL), but the US Dollar is widely accepted, although cash shortages and inconsistent ATM access can be an issue.
Zimbabwe operates on Central African Time (GMT+2), and its international dialing code is +263. The country uses plug types D and G, with a standard voltage of 220V. Telecommunications infrastructure includes fiber internet in major cities and satellite coverage in rural areas. Zimbabwe has a single state TV station, ZBC TV, with additional access to satellite services such as DStv.
Transportation infrastructure includes three main international airports: Harare, Bulawayo, and Victoria Falls. Rail services are available between major cities but are poorly maintained. Buses are the primary mode of public transport, with express services operating on schedules and local buses leaving once full. Road travel is common, but travelers should be cautious of unmarked railway crossings and flooding during the rainy season.
Health care in Zimbabwe varies greatly, with quality diminishing outside of major urban centers. Visitors should carry their own medications and ensure all routine vaccinations are up to date. Additional vaccinations for Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Rabies, and Malaria prevention are recommended, especially for travel to areas like the Zambezi Valley and Victoria Falls. Water- and insect-borne diseases such as cholera, sleeping sickness, and bilharzia are also risks.
Crime levels are generally low, but petty crime like pickpocketing can occur. Political tensions exist, so travelers are advised to avoid political discussions or demonstrations. Same-sex relations between men are illegal, and public displays of affection may attract negative attention regardless of orientation.
Zimbabwe is a year-round destination, though the dry season from May to November is best for safaris. Key attractions include Hwange National Park, famous for its large elephant population and rare species like the African wild dog and black rhino; Mana Pools National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site ideal for walking safaris and birdwatching; and Matobo National Park, known for its unique rock formations and ancient cave art. Historical and cultural sites such as the Great Zimbabwe Ruins and the Chinhoyi Caves offer insights into the country’s rich heritage. Nature lovers will also enjoy the scenic Chimanimani Mountains and houseboat adventures on Lake Kariba.
With its blend of natural wonders, cultural richness, and historical depth, Zimbabwe remains one of Africa’s most captivating destinations.
